Your automobile insurance liability slips or commonly known as, pink slips, are very important item to keep in your car at all times. The most common place to leave it is in your glove compartment or clip their liability slips in behind the overhead sun visor.
Under Ontario law, every driver must carry their proof of auto insurance (Liability Slip) which is valid only in paper format. Failure to do so can result in a conviction on your driving record (“Failure to Carry your Insurance Card”). There could be changes that will eventually allow drivers to carry an electronic copy of their proof of insurance (Electronic Liability Slips) that could be counted as valid.
Nova Scotia recently became the first province in Canada to allow drivers to carry electronic liability slips as their proof of auto insurance. They join 46 U.S. states that already allow it. According to a survey done by the Insurance Bureau of Canada, Ontarians by a huge margin, prefer to have the option of carrying electronic liability slips rather than paper pink slips.
IBC’s January 2018 poll was conducted by the market research firm Leger. The results show that:
- 74% of Ontarians want the option of receiving their insurance documents (proof of insurance card, insurance renewals) electronically;
- 78% of Ontarians feel that receiving their insurance documents electronically would be convenient;
- 88% of Ontarians receive at least one bill electronically (e.g. phone bill, bank statement), and;
- 79% of Ontarians believe that insurance information available online is as safe as paper-based communications.
“Ontario drivers are very supportive of digital documents,” said Kim Donaldson, the Ontario Vice President of IBC. “We use our mobile devices to get on airplanes and buy our coffees. Why can’t we use them to display our proof of insurance?”
Insurance companies are already moving towards using technology to enhance the insurance experience for the consumer. For example, Intact Insurance one of Canada’s leading insurers allows customers to download a mobile app on their phones that track their vehicle usage in order to qualify for their My Driving Discount.
